Containers that are difficult to clean (contaminated) can be removed from the recycling stream and sent to landfill. Badly contaminated containers, particularly liquids, can also contaminate other containers. To save water, rinse containers in your washing-up water. They don’t need to go through a dishwasher.

It’s also good practice to squash plastic, tin and aluminium containers to save space. Not only does this save space in your recycling bin but it also provides transport efficiencies.

Wash and Squash before you Toss

Whether you leave the lid on the container or not depends on where in NZ you live. We recommend having a look at your local council’s website or getting in touch with them. The following major cities recommend:

  • Auckland – Leave lid on
  • Hamilton – Take lid off
  • Wellington – Take lid off
  • Christchurch – Take lid off
